Colleagues,
Perhaps you’re wondering…
Is there one day throughout the state devoted to grieving one’s property taxes?
We consulted 2 assessors:
Yes and no! (don’t you love that) In cities the taxable status date is usually January 1, so grievance follows in the month of January.
In most suburban towns grievance day is the fourth Tuesday in May. In some it has been changed by local law because many smaller jurisdictions share an assessor and need to change the date so the assessor can be in attendance.
You do have to remember…you cannot grieve your taxes, only the assessed value of your home. The assessments only distribute the burden of governmental bodies’ budgets and expenditures. If you go into the proceedings talking about taxes, you will not be successful.
Additionally, property owners who feel that they are not being assessed fairly should make an appointment with their assessor as their first step in this process, and provide supporting information regarding what they feel is the correct assessment if they feel their current assessment is wrong. The basis for any grievance is for the property owner to state their opinion of value for the property in question, so it is something individuals should be knowledgeable.
That said, most offices will discuss an assessment at any time and a change can be made at any time. It may not take effect until the following taxable status year, depending on the time of year the change was made.
